Dragon Cowboy | Michael Dahl

I am not going to lie. When this small, heavily reliant on graphics book appeared in my mailbox, I all but did a cartwheel. I ripped into immediately, grateful for the change of pace. And at first, I was confused. The book's use is apparent immediately - it is meant for lower level readers in the middle grade. But which? The fantasy lovers, who are pro-dragon. Or the wild range variety? I don't have many of those. Maybe my ESL students? They're usually more of a realistic fiction, heavy on the sports crowd...

I might ordinarily be quick to dismiss a title like this, had I not been working in a school library. I like the way the graphics emphasis certain words, the minimal writing and the unique packaging. You can't judge a book by it's cover, but all of those visual components work really well.

The story though.... I don't know, I'm just not on board. But I am curious to see what some of the kids in the library think. Color me intrigued.
