Reckless | Cornelia Funke
Jacob never intended for Will to learn about the world behind the mirror this way. He never intended for him to find this world at all. But now that his brother is cursed, turning to stone before his very eyes. Will Jacob be able to find the cure in time? Or will the magic of the land kill them both?
I loved this book with absolute reckless abandon. You like what I did there, right, with the cleverness? I could never dream of being as clever as this book. I read it in one entire day, from sunrise to sunset. It's my first Funke experience, but I can't wait to chew through everything else she has ever written. The interplay of familiar fairy tale stories and characters is beautifully interwoven with a quest tale, political rivals, jealous lovers and love, love, love. Not enough love to prevent a boy from enjoying this story, but certainly enough to get me a little hot under the collar when you read between the lines of Jacob's relationships with a certain fairy and his own brother's girlfriend. Phew. I found myself totally falling for familiar feints, my heart leaping as the story went on. Not only is this one of my favorite Cybils read -- no, my second favorite, after Fever Crumb -- it is in my top reads for the year. As you start to gather supplies for any surprise winter storms, I highly recommend stowing a copy of this away with your stockpile of hot cocoa and canned deviled ham (well....those are my favorite winter luxuries anyway). You won't regret it.
